Eye and Vision Exams

What Should You Expect During an Eye Exam in Fort Collins?

Anyone who wants to take care of their eyes should go to an eye exam yearly at the very least. Your optometrist can tell you how often they'd like to see you for follow-up visits after your first exam.

During every exam, you'll be asked about your medical history and any eye trouble you're having currently. You'll need to have your eye pressure measured, too. If you'll be having your eyes dilated, it's a good choice to have someone else come with you to the appointment and drive you home. You'll want to have sunglasses on hand, too, since your eyes will be more sensitive to light.

During your exam, you can expect to take a number of tests to determine your visual acuity, eye pressure and distance vision. Dilation may be used to check the inside of your eyes for damage. We then have a vision exam that will determine if you need prescription lenses. If you do, our teach will help you pick the right contacts or glasses to correct your vision.

What Problems Do Optometrists Screen For?

During your exam, we will screen for many kinds of eye injuries and diseases including:

  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration
  • Astigmatism
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal detachments
  • Allergies
  • High blood pressure
  • Nearsightedness
  • Farsightedness

... and many other possible conditions. Everyone's screening process is very similar, but if you have any complaints about your vision, your eye doctor will make sure to thoroughly check for conditions that may be affecting your sight specifically in that manner.

What Is the Importance of Having Regular Eye Exams?

Regular eye exams give you the opportunity to make sure that your eyes are healthy. If there is any kind of problem, then you can pursue treatments with the help of your optometrist. Your optometrist may be able to refer you for specialist treatments or provide you with helpful treatment options that they can provide directly. Every patient is different, so the treatment you need will depend on the outcome of your eye test.
